Psychological suspense courtroom drama to be published by Canelo
Editorial director Louise Cullen has acquired World English Language rights to a psychological suspense debut by Ros Carne from Anne-Marie Doulton at Ampersand Agency in a two-book deal.
The Pupil is a dual narrative tale of two women whose trainee and mentor relationship goes badly wrong when barrister Mel underestimates the lengths Natasha will go to for the sake of her career. While Mel’s personal life is in crisis, she makes mistakes that give her pupil the chance to ruin her. The pair end up in court – but this time as the defendant and victim. Who will come out on top?
Ros Carne is a former barrister, who practised law for thirteen years before moving into teaching. She is now a full time writer and working on her second psychological suspense novel.
Louise Cullen says: ‘I have always been a fan of fiction set in the legal profession and when I read The Pupil it instantly drew me in. Both Mel and Natasha are brilliantly flawed and compelling characters. I’m delighted to be publishing this fantastic novel.’
Ros Carne says: ‘It’s been every writer’s dream. First to be taken on by the wonderful Anne- Marie Doulton of Ampersand Agency and then to sign a two book deal with Canelo. I am so lucky to have Louise Cullen as my editor. Her comments on The Pupil have been hugely inspiring and I can’t wait to start work with her on my latest thriller.’
Anne-Marie Doulton says: ‘When I first read The Pupil I was immediately drawn in by the powerful premise, the nuanced characters, the psychological insights and tensions, and – not least – Ros Carne's stand-out writing. That combination proved irresistible, and I was very pleased indeed to find that Louise Cullen at Canelo agreed with me. Thanks to Louise's careful guidance, fans of Apple Tree Yard and Blood Orange can now look forward to a big new treat when The Pupil is published.’
The Pupil will be published in ebook and mass market paperback by Canelo in August 2020 and is available to pre-order now. For more information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
