Louise Cullen, publishing director, has acquired UK & Commonwealth excluding Canada rights to Death in Summer, a Swedish-set crime thriller by debut author Lina Areklew from Judith Toth at Nordin Agency.
The novel opens with Fredrik Fröding taking an unplanned journey to the island of Ulvön on a quest to find his brother – despite the fact that Niklas is believed to have died many years ago. Fredrik’s obsession with finding Niklas has cost him his police career, and now his refusal to accept the truth puts him in great danger. Detective Sofia Hjortén retreated to Ulvön after her personal life fell apart and now she lives quietly among the small island community. When a man is murdered at the local hotel, Sofia is shocked to see Fredrik in the area: his departure from police training also signalled the end of their brief intimacy. Sofia’s investigation leads her to unravel secrets from forty years ago, but solving the case is made considerably harder when the key suspect in the crime turns out to be Fredrik. Has his fragile mental state led to violence, or is there someone else out there whose demons have led to bloodshed?
Lina Areklew was born in Stockholm in 1979 and grew up on the High Coast. Today she divides her time between a house northwest of Stockholm and a croft outside Örnsköldsvik. After a career as a project manager within telecommunications, she studied literature and now works as a freelance copy editor. Her debut novel is set in Stockholm and on the island Ulvön outside Örnsköldsvik.
Louise Cullen says: ‘I was immediately drawn into Lina’s debut when I read the opening pages and met Fredrik, whose lack of self preservation and absolute denial of the truth is hard to look away from. He is perfectly balanced by Sofia, yet despite her clear-sightedness she too has flaws that risk her losing everything. The meld of disturbing historical events and present day murders, set against the intensely atmospheric backdrop of Sweden’s High Coast region, was irresistible. I am thrilled to bring our first Scandinavian author to the Canelo Crime list.’
Lina Areklew says: ‘I am so pleased to finally introduce the island of Ulvön to the English speaking readers. It has long been a dream of mine. And thanks to Canelo that dream has come true! You will get to know my main characters Sofia, who is a detective with the northern Sweden police district and Fredrik who is a survivor of the Estonia ferry disaster. Twenty-five years ago they were lovers, now they meet again. She is the investigator. He is the suspect.’
Judith Toth says: ‘It’s thrilling that Canelo brings Lina Areklew’s writing to the UK audience. Death in Summer is a poignant crime novel about loneliness and grief which takes off with the tragic sinking of the ferry M/S Estonia 1994, killing almost a thousand people. It has unique psychological depth, dealing with overcoming sorrow, mental health issues and ability to function after deep personal tragedies. Besides a thrilling multi-layered plot we follow our two main characters trying to form a life after losing everything, all embedded in astonishing descriptions of the harsh archipelago setting at the High Coast.’
Death in Summer will be published in May 2022, in ebook and mass market paperback. For more information please contact email@example.com
