Editors Michael Bhaskar, Craig Lye and Kit Nevile have jointly acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in eighteen books by legendary author Craig Thomas from The bks Agency and Mach6 Publications, the company owning the copyright of Thomas’ work.
The 8th August marks the 45th anniversary of Thomas’ seminal novel Firefox, a Cold War classic that instantly invented the decade-defining genre of techno-thriller and went on to sell millions of copies around the world. It follows a game-changing new stealth-fighter plane with thought-controlled missiles built by the Soviets – and its daring theft.
Coming at a time of heightened tensions with Russia, and in the wake of the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, the book is both eerily prescient and perfect for an audience of cold-war, espionage and military thriller fans. The first books are publishing in October in paperback and ebook, with the rest to follow next year. Re-inventing overlooked genres is a core part of Canelo’s publishing strategy.
Sue Everett, proprietor of Mach6, said ‘Craig Thomas is among the crème de la crème of British thriller writers so when the copyright of his 18 novels went to auction, I was terrifically excited at the prospect of bringing all his adventure stories to a 21st-century audience. We now begin the journey and hopes are that his stories will excite an even bigger audience via TV and film. Watch this space…’
Michael Bhaskar, Publishing Director at Canelo, said ‘We’ve been chasing Craig Thomas for years. These were some of the most iconic smash-hit thrillers of their time and defined a genre that captured the public’s imagination like few others. Gripping, explosive and suddenly extremely relevant, it’s time for the techno-thriller to fly once again. Buckle up!’
Canelo is a commercial fiction and non-fiction publisher with an industry-leading royalty offer and was shortlisted for Independent Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2021 and 2022.
